Overview
Muhima Hospital is a public hospital located in Nyarugenge District in City of Kigali. The hospital started to operate in 2001 as an extension of the Muhima Health Center which was constructed in 1988. It was built under financing of the World Bank through the project “Santé Population” and assigned to the Ministry of Health in July 2001.
On 22nd April 2002, as part of the Ministry of Health's decentralization initiative, Muhima Hospital was transferred to the City of Kigali. Along with its medical and paramedical personnel, it became the District Hospital for Nyarugenge.
Muhima Hospital is a primarily a maternal-child hospital with 164 beds and an average
occupancy rate is in average of 62.5 % (HIMS, June 2025).
It has the following services: Gyneco-obstetric service, Neonatology, Pediatric, Nutrition,
OPD for adults, ARV and TB services, Laboratory, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Dentistry,
NCDs, Family planning, pharmacy, Ophthalmology, Isange One Stop Center, Mental
Health service, Technical and administrative support services.
Muhima Hospital oversees 4 functional health centers. It currently serves a population of 136,975 persons (HMIS, 2023). It is a referral Hospital for 4 health centers namely;
Muhima, Rwampara, Cor-unum and Kanyinya. In additional of the mentioned catchment area, due to its location Muhima Hospital receives clients mostly maternal and infant from Gasabo, Kicukiro, Rulindo and Kamonyi Districts.
